Sniper Training Course. Special Ops
No I of V
Snipers candidate to be appointed a member of ******, should display special skills with a rifle. These skills can be acquired by them during the competition, or during the appropriate training in the army.
Unfortunately, not all units are guided by these criteria in the selection of candidates for snipers. We met with the candidates who had never held a rifle. In some parts of this post are prescribed older, overweight employees because they cannot run or do not have time for a the young and healthy employee.
>> The sniper must be in excellent physical shape. One must run, climb walls and rappel on a par with the best fighters; he or she has to carry a heavier weapon than the others in addition to the standard equipment. A good sniper should also be able to monitor heart and breathing. If one’s heart is pounding and pants for air after a hard climb to the roof of a building, it is not an advantage with regard to marksmanship or anything else for that matter. <<
Therefore it is very often the result of such poor selection that is offered into a basic military training courses.
No book can teach marksmanship with a rifle and it is impossible to find a replacement for long hours of training under the watchful eye of a competent instructor. Those employees, who are really interested in mastering the art of sniping, should necessarily participate in different kinds of competitions in rifle shooting. During such events the sniper has the opportunity to meet with snipers from other departments; compare equipment, share experiences, techniques; the sniper has to shoot under stress and after the competition is given an accurate assessment of the level attained and sees what has to be improved upon.
The initial training
A typical training school for police sniper units use a programme that often includes the following items;
role and place of the sniper
selection of rifles and ammunition
preparing and bringing to normal battle rifle
ballistics: internal, external and final trajectory
fundamentals of marksmanship
shooting in reduced lighting
snipers tactics and field skills
intelligence and targeting
aiming point and fire on the team
simultaneous fire / sniper ambush
assault supported by snipers
surveillance and information gathering
storage and conservation of weapons
Here let’s consider a typical one – and two – day programme used by Special Forces. These programmess are designed for experienced snipers who need to polish their skills.
Exercises for the Sniper
Snipers are trained as a separate and independent element, and as part of a tactical assault team. Initially, I will reveal features of training specifically for snipers.
On arriving at the shooting range snipers in their training apply a realistic approach. We start with a 100 – metre areas where they occupy positions in the line. For each field the sniper is set several targets.
Instructors evaluate how quickly, silently and effectively is the preparation for the first sniper shot – a shot from a cold barrel – the most important shot of the day. Every shot is carefully disassembled, evaluated and recorded in the sniper book. Targets can be signed and kept, snipers to report on arrival in their units.
Exercise One. A Shot From a Cold Barrel
Shooting is conducted on two targets at the head range of 100 metres from a prone position / s stop. Sniper weapon can use strap, bipod, sandbags or other property which it may have at the time. After the sniper team has unlimited time for a shot in the left centre of the target, reload and shot from the right of the target. During the operation the sniper is not allowed to produce a test shot or include adjustment so cold bore shot of checks and arrow and weapons and their ability to hit the target with the first shot. The second shot is designed to produce sniper quality reloading and produce a shot automatically when the target is not dropped after the first shot.
Shot from a cold barrel shall not deviate from the aiming point by more than 2.5 cm This requirement is unrealistic for modern sniper systems and ammunition. Shooter is not under stress, has unlimited time and perfect conditions.
Group Exercise Two
Being in the same position for firing (lying / s stop), the sniper has unlimited time for shooting a group of five shots. The aim should be to have a small but legible aiming point in this exercise. It is designed to test the stability of a rifle sight, ammunition and arrow. Remember the aphorism; Accuracy is the result of uniformity.
Group radius greater than 2.5 cm should alarm a good shooter with a great weapon, but for the novice shooter with medium weapon at least 5 cm result is quite satisfactory. Should strive to ensure that the group was less than the radius of 2.5 cm
Common causes of variation are loose screws in sight and mounting mechanisms, unbalanced trunk fault shock – the trigger mechanism and inadequate skills in the manufacture of arrow shot.
Exercise Three. Lying Without Stop
When performing this exercise, should make snipers fire five shots from a prone position without stop (without bipod and sandbags) on a silhouette target with reduced dimensions. During the exercise, we will witness the ability of snipers to fire using a belt. During the operation emplacement sniper cannot always allow the use of stops.
Experienced snipers with a properly fitted belts with gloves and shooting jackets able to shoot a group with a score of less than 7.5 cm accuracy. Less experienced shooters can be satisfied with the result of less than 15 cm Comfort positions and breath control play an important role in this exercise.
Exercise Four. The Shooting Team
Five rounds and each team produces one shot on target parent. This exercise is performed from a prone position / s stop, where a sniper should shoot for a second from the time of submission. – At the moment the sniper team is ready on the position and aiming at the target.
Instructor monitors the stable centre of the target lesion on the pitch. And again, good shooters have to meet in a circle of 5 cm at the same time the bullet is caught in a circle of diameter 10 cm, will lead to the death of the enemy.
Exercise Five. Shooting Gulp
Each arrow in the assigned goal line (paper or three-dimensional head target). Given a countdown from 5 to 1. On the count of one, all snipers must simultaneously make one shot. This exercise is repeated five times.
All targets must be struck by five shots in the centre, the instructor watching the shooting to determine shooters who shoot too early or, conversely, too late.
Shooting volley is important during an ambush and in situations where several terrorists must be destroyed immediately. A premature shot can alert and they have time to take shelter or start killing hostages.
Note. Exercises for the shooting team and shooting volley should be given extra attention and study time, if we want to prepare professionals.
Exercise Six. Shooting at 200 metres
After moving to the area, shooting at a range of 200 metres, the snipers must as soon as possible prepare for shooting in prone position / s stop. Using well-known sights installation or removal of aiming point, snipers produce five shots to the head of the target. Shooting may be limited by time or by command (see above).
It is not surprising that most police snipers never shot at a range in excess of 100 metres. Therefore, this exercise gives them some experience.
An acceptable result can be considered as falling into the centre of the head with a diameter of 7.5 Dispel – 10 cm. Some shooters will be satisfied with just head shots, while others may get a group of dispersion less than 5 cm in diameter.
Exercise Seven. Shooting at 300 metres
After moving to the area, shooting at distances of 300 metres, snipers produce five shots, aiming at the chest. Firing position – lying / s stop. Snipers should be given sufficient time to produce a well-aimed shot. Firing range of 300 metres is almost the limit for the police sniper because the target identification in the face at large distances is very difficult.
The trajectory of the bullet calibre .308 passes to 38 – 43 cm below the line of sight when shooting at 300 metres, if the rifle was reduced to a normal fight at 100 metres. Sniper must firmly know the values of the amendments introduced in the scope or location of the aiming point when firing at a range of 200 and 300 metres.
When shooting under ideal conditions at a distance of 300 metres, is the standard group hit in centre of the chest diameter of 12 – 15 cm wind speed of 18 km / h (5 m / s) blowing at an angle of 90 degrees to the plane of fire, deflects bullet at 12 – 17 cm from the point of aim when shooting at a distance of 300 metres.
Exercise Eight. Shooting after Exercise
Snipers are nominated from the line running 200 metres to the line of 100 metres and firing five shots at a target at a rapid pace, from any position by using the stop. The instructor assesses the impact of stress and heavy breathing on the shooting results.
Push-ups, downs body from a prone position or climbing a rope can also be used for rapid breathing and heart rate.
These sessions are a series of exercises, including 1 – 2 shots each, for varieties of shot and unknown distance. Shooting at unknown distance is an integral part of the training of the sniper. The sniper always has to determine how to define the range of sight installations.
The instructor must exercise maximum fantasies when preparing such studies, at the same time they should include: shooting at targets in the vicinity of the hostages, shooting at high angles of target sites, shooting through the open window, shooting at targets in the car on the moving targets Target shooting and rotating under the crowds. Each situation must require the sniper position selection, target identification, communication and then only when the shooting.
Tactical exercises can be performed by one sniper, a couple or a division of snipers. Strive to ensure that the lessons were interesting, varied and realistic.
Appointment of such exercises is to give information about the behaviour of sniper bullets in different conditions.
This may include; the firing through various types of glass and barriers at different angles for determining the deviation of the bullets, and tests penetration, bullets by firing on the barricades, gelatine blocks, car doors and windshields, etc. Shooting in wind conditions at long range can also be attributed to such exercises.
All the results of such exercises should be documented and captured on video for future generations of snipers who may not have the time or the necessary materials to conduct their own experiments.
Exercises as Part of a Subdivision
As an integral part of a sniper team, capture exercise comprising units should be included in the training of a sniper.
Such an exercise scenario could be as follows; there is a sniper on a preliminary briefing, choose a place to position, identifies possible targets, transmits information to the command post and waits for a command to open fire. Sniper shot can serve as a signal to begin the assault or just want to provide cover fire, retractable pickup group and continue to transmit information.
Capture team must be fully confident in the ability of a sniper firing at targets located in close proximity to a group of fighters. This confidence can only occur when team members see a high degree of accuracy and professionalism, which has a sniper.
You should always assign at least two snipers on every terrorist, and this in turn leads to the fact that it is necessary to pay great attention to the development of the ability to simultaneously fire.
